Carmelo Residence

Carmelo Residence

This design, being built in Carmel-by-the-Sea, will be an elegant modern structure in keeping with many of the significant modernist homes in the City. While the rational plan and flat roof plane of the design recall Carmel’s mid-century heritage, the materiality of the proposed board and batten siding, finished to naturally age to a coastal grey, links the home in a visceral way to the naturally-aged redwood single-wall cottages on which this town was founded. The contrast between the home’s traditional materiality and its formal modernity is intended to create a happy, complimentary and harmonious dialogue between past and present. This new home nestles itself carefully within the existing oak trees, using them as a dramatic, natural foreground and screen for the more subtle architecture.
